March 12 2009 Ycabc Minutes

Yakima County Asset Building Coalition Meeting
March 12, 2009

Present: David Gilbreath, Sylvia Martinez, Lindsay Jacobson, Bill Stevens, Lance Stephens, Michele Besso.

Minutes: Motion made to accept the minutes as submitted. Motion passed.

EITC Committee Update: The ad hoc site in Granger will be open tomorrow, Friday. Ads have been placed in the media.
 Gates & WalMart Grants – Lindsay has done a lot of advertising using the Gates grant money. The WalMart money will be used to advertise for Super Refund Saturday, March 21st.

$3,000 has been budgeted for #211. It was agreed that those who answer that number need to have training regarding where the various sites are, etc. Bill or Lance will check into that to see just what kind of training those people do receive.

 Super Refund Saturday – This will take place at 3 sites: Morning Star, St. Vincent de Paul, and Harmon Center. At St. Vincent there is a very small place to use for this and there are many people who take advantage of this program at St. Vincent. There was discussion and suggestions regarding putting signage out for the public and also making the facility more comfortable for people as they wait for their taxes to be done. It was moved, 2nd and passed for Lindsay to do some promotion for this place.

Proclamations: This was read at the county and city February 24th.

Request from People for People: A motion was made and 2nd to reimburse People for People $3,000 for the cost of funding the 211 number during tax season. Motion passed.

Paul Knox Visit: He recommended that we find two or three things we can focus on and do them well. Suggestions of programs YCABC could focus on include:

 Continue to support and expand EITC.
 Bank the unbanked – We would need to educate ourselves in this program. Someone could visit with us who has worked with this program and share what they have learned and give suggestions for making it work.
 Financial literacy – Could work with a credit union or bank, DSHS, etc.

Dave Gilbreath, Michele Besso, Lindsay Jacobson, Lance Stephens, and Bill Stevens volunteered to be a committee that at April’s meeting will recommend what the Coalition should focus on and how to proceed. A tentative date for them to meet will be March 27, 1:00 pm, at United Way.

The next regular meeting will be April 9th at 9:00 am.

Respectfully submitted,
Ann Goebel
